WHY DO I NEED TO TRAIN MY DOG?
If you visited any Animal Shelter, you would find many dogs that were disposed of because they developed behavior problems that their previous owners found unacceptable. Most of those people had good intentions when they first adopted a pet into their families, but didn’t understand that dogs need training in order to become enjoyable canine companions. Unfortunately, those dogs ended up in a precarious situation because their people did not seek the professional help with training that could have prevented, or solved, their dog’s behavioral problems. It’s really very sad and unnecessary.
WHEN SHOULD I BEGIN TRAINING? Whether you realize it or not, you begin teaching your dog just as soon as you take him into your family. He can either learn desirable behaviors (based on training techniques appropriate for his temperament), or very negative ones (due to improper handling or lack of a conscious training plan). Proper training techniques not only help to prevent and solve behavior problems, but also enable you to better the communication, and strengthen the bond, between you and your dog—which will make for a much more mutually enjoyable relationship! Because most young puppies are very impressionable, it is generally easier to start their training as early as possible. In order to be in a group class – around other canines – I like a puppy to have at least 2 sets of vaccinations and be about 12 weeks of age. However, private in-home training can start just as soon as you bring your dog home. (In fact, it is sometimes beneficial for first-time dog owners to have a consultation BEFORE they get a dog – in order to learn how to get the right puppy for their family, and start off on the right paw.) By simply teaching your puppy how a companion dog should behave, you will avoid many potentially serious behavior problems. However, you CAN also teach an older dog new “tricks”… The time to start training is NOW!
